IKEA is a Swedish company that designs and sells furniture (ready-to-assemble such as beds, chairs and desks), appliances and home accessories. The company is the world’s biggest furniture retailer. IKEA is founded in 1943 by 17-year-old Swedish Ingvar Kamprad. Kamprad began to create a business as a young boy. From his bicycle he was selling matches to neighbors. When he was 17, his father gave him money as a reward for successfully completing his studies. With the money he saved and got from his father, he started a company. He named his company IKEA. IKEA is an acronym made up of the initials of his name (I)ngvar (K)amprad and those of (E)lmtaryd, the farm where he was born, and the village nearby where he grew up, (A)gunnaryd.
At the beginning Kamprad was selling all kinds of goods at low prices like matches, fish, seeds, and later on ballpoint pens and pencils. His company flourished and in 1947 he started selling IKEA furniture. His business was mostly mail-order. From 1950 onwards some important changes were made: complete switch to selling furniture, the very first IKEA catalogue appeared and the decision was made to let costumers assemble their own furniture. The biggest store - since 1965 - is at Stockholm. In 1976 the company crossed the border. IKEA came to Dublin in 2009.
